The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
