Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
